Who Do You Think You Are?

Understanding Our Identity in Christ

Welcome to our new series, "Five and Five," where we will explore the book of Ephesians over the next five weeks with five different speakers. Today, we delve into the profound question, "Who do you think you are?" This sermon focuses on understanding our true identity in Christ, a topic that resonates deeply with many of us as we navigate life's challenges and uncertainties.

The Importance of Identity

What is Identity?

Identity is defined as the distinguishing character or personality of an individual. Psychologists describe it as the beliefs, ideals, and values that shape and guide a person's behavior. Our identity is influenced by our experiences and interactions, guiding our actions, beliefs, and behaviors as we age.

The Crisis of Identity

Many of us experience an identity crisis at various stages of life, whether in our twenties and thirties or later in our forties and fifties. These crises can be opportunities for growth or dangerous pitfalls if not navigated carefully. The key is to ensure that our identity crisis leads to positive change rather than negative coping mechanisms.

Who Do You Think You Are?

I Am Chosen

Ephesians 1:4-5 tells us that even before He made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in His eyes. This deliberate choice means that we are selected by God out of sheer love. Regardless of our past mistakes or the lies we've believed, we are chosen by the Most High God.

I Am Free

Ephesians 1:7-8 emphasizes that because of the sacrifice of Jesus, we are a free people—free from penalties and punishments chalked up by our own misdeeds. This freedom is not just barely free but abundantly free. We are free from pride, anger, sorrow, depression, and all other negative emotions and circumstances.

I Am Made for His Glory

Ephesians 1:11-12 reveals that it is in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Our true identity and purpose are found in Him, not in our achievements, relationships, or material possessions. The enemy may try to make us believe otherwise, but our purpose is to bring glory to God.

Personal Testimony

The speaker shared a powerful personal testimony of growing up in the church, losing their way, and eventually finding their identity in Christ again. This journey involved overcoming feelings of being "damaged goods" and embracing the truth that they are chosen, free, and made for God's glory.
